Obama Tells Democrats to Stay Strong to Defend Obamacare
Today, President Obama held a closed-door meeting with democrats to discuss how to defend the Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare.
Republicans are desperate to get rid of the act and it is one of the priorities for the new government.
The legislation together with other health policies, however, is arguably the Obama administration’s best achievement.
The Democrats have no reason to help the Republicans get rid of the Affordable Care Act(ACA). To do it the Republicans are going to have to resort to executive actions and legislation. One of the other problems they face is that it will take at least six months for the Republicans to come up with a replacement for the ACA.
It is believed that Obama is making one last effort to hold on to this achievement before Donald Trump takes over the presidency.
The meeting was two hours long and it is believed he advised his party that they did not have to rescue Republicans and to stay strong in opposing the dismantling of Obamacare.
As the meeting took place, Vice President-elect announced a “two track” approach to dismantle the ACA and a whole raft of other policies using legislation and executive powers. He said Trump was, “working on a series of executive orders that will enable that orderly transition to take place.”
He went on to say that “Obamacare had failed,” but did not say how.
Pence did not elaborate on other policies the Republicans were planning to reverse. It is believed that public land protections would also be dismantled. LGBTQ safeguards and curbing greenhouse gas emissions are also likely to be reversed.
Josh Earnest, White House press secretary stated the Democrats were well positioned to defend Obamacare, which has extended health insurance to over 20 million people. He said, “And the president feels strongly this is a debate that Democrats can win because of the impact that repealing the law, as Republicans are vowing to do, would have on the lives of people in communities all across the country.”
