Apple to Start TV Streaming Service Featuring Apple Made Content

Apple is to following the footsteps of Amazon and Netflix by producing its own television and film content.  Reports are surfacing that the company has spoken to ‘veteran producers’ about producing content to take on the two big streaming giants.

It is believed that the new television content could be available by the end of this year, and it will be bundled with its music streaming content.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the new content will be a way offsetting the sliding sales of phones and tablets.  Apple has bought the rights to James Cordon’s Carpool Karaoke, and this has been turned into a miniseries.  It signed a deal with CBS Television Studios and Fulwell 73 to produce the show.  Subscribers to the iPhone music maker app and E! will be able to watch it.

Sources close to the company’s top brass have said that the company has realised that people want more than ten-minute music documentaries.  Now, Apple is looking to produce TV that could rival Stranger Things and Westworld.

Apple was the first to offer online music in 2001 legally, and in 2015 released Apple music a streaming service.  Apple has released details of a forthcoming television show entitled ‘Planet of the Apps’.  It is co-produced with Propagate a newly launched TV company.

From what Apple have said it is a little like Dragon’s Den but exclusively for app creators.

Propagate is co-owned by Ben Silverman, who is probably best known for the Biggest Loser.  Will.i.am is also thought to be involved.

Although Planet of the Apps and Carpool Karoke may have some draw, Apple will need to create strong narratives and bring in top acting talent before it can rival Netflix or Amazon, whose shows command strong audiences around the world.

Apple has the resources to do it, but does it have the will.  Funding two reality shows may suggest it does not.
